Andy Bass talks about his recent visit to OU, and his upcoming commitment

2024 three-star ATH Andy Bass will announce his college decision on August 24th. Bass recently dropped a top three of Oklahoma, Syracuse, and Kansas State. Ever since Andy Bass came to Oklahoma’s camp in June, DeMarco Murray and the Sooners have been working to get the commitment from one of the most underrated players in the state of Oklahoma.

Bass visited Oklahoma for their party at the palace event last weekend. This was his first time being on campus since June 13th. What did he have to say about the visit? Bass said, “It was a great time. Kind of got to meet some of the other recruits too. some of the top guys in the state and just kind of all around the nation. One of the things I was looking for going into it, was kind of their plan for me. So I got to meet with Coach Lebby and Coach Murray for a long time. They kind of shared their vision for me, which was really helpful to hear and it definitely made me excited to continue to think about them. So, yeah, it was fun.”

Andy Bass plays his high school football for the Heritage Hall Chargers. Last year in his junior season, Bass helped lead the Chargers to a state championship. He did it all for the Chargers last season. Posting 3,762 total yards, 2,760 were passing yards, and he rushed for the other 1,002. Bass totaled 42 touchdowns on the season, making him responsible for 2.8 touchdowns per game. He plays quarterback for Heritage Hall, but Bass can play a multitude of positions such as running back and wide receiver.

“I play quarterback in high school. I've played quarterback my whole life which I think, gives me a good advantage of understanding the offense and, and stuff,” he said. Out of all of the positions he plays, quarterback is currently his favorite position to play, however, Bass said, “I think I'll project the most and do the best in college, kind of flipping it around playing some running back.”

Bass told The Crimson Captain about Oklahoma’s plan for him saying, “I'd be in the running back room, kind of learning from DeMarco and stuff, they also mentioned split me out wide kind of trying to get me one-on-one with linebackers. I'd be running between the tackles too, but I'd also be split out wide and Coach Lebby mentioned playing some quarterback inside the goal line, kind of having my own package.” Bass mentioned DeMarco Murray was his lead recruiter, and he talked about Coach Murray saying, “He's a great coach. I can tell he coaches players hard and we've gotten to build a great relationship.”

Sophomore wide receiver Gavin Freeman was a high school teammate of Bass’ at Heritage Hall. Andy Bass spoke about their relationship saying, “We're really close. My sophomore year I had to sit out because I transferred, which was his senior season. So I just got to watch him ball out. But we became really good friends. That year in track, we got to race against each other. We got to do that. We were on the same four-by-one team and set the state records. Yeah, we're really close.” Bass was asked which of the two of them was faster and he said, “I wasn't my sophomore year but I am now.” Bass runs a blazing 4.37 40-yard dash and a 10.56 100m dash.

Heading into his senior season, Bass talked about the aspects of his game he looks to improve saying, “I'll be running track this spring, so just kind of continuing to get faster and I think that'll really help me just having the edge, if you're faster than other guys, it doesn't really matter what they can do if you can just outrun them. So that, and just keep getting in the weight room, getting stronger, kind of understanding defenses a little better. That's definitely something I'm gonna work on my senior year, just kind of preparing each game and getting to see what the defense tendencies are and stuff like that.”

The three-star ATH will announce his commitment on August 24th with the finalists being Oklahoma, Kansas State, and Syracuse. Bass spoke about both of the schools Oklahoma is competing with.

Kansas State: “I really like the coaching staff there. I think they did a really good job. Obviously, they won the Big 12 last year. I think they're gonna be really good again this year. Just getting to play in a place like that with good coaches and good mindset from all the players, it's gonna be hard to pass up, so we'll see,” said Bass.

Syracuse: “Syracuse has a really unique plan for me. It'd be kind of like, OU’s a little bit, I'd be playing in a lot of different positions. but they haven't really done it with anybody else. Before. So, like, it would just be a very unique opportunity,” Bass said.

Bass spoke about some of the most important factors he takes into consideration while making his decision saying, “Just having a good relationship with the coaching staff, obviously that's who you're gonna spend all your time with. So just making sure you guys are close and you like spending time with them and getting coached from them. Facilities, all three of those schools have really good facilities, so it's not really an issue. And kind of the players, you know, I got to hang out with some players at OU and Syracuse and I went on my official. and then just kind of being around them at K-State. So just kind of thinking about the players, that's kind of the best gauge you can get as far as thinking about colleges is really just talking to the players and how they think and how they act and stuff.”

The Sooners will look to add their third in-state commit and the services of Andy Bass on August 24th.
