Mason Murphy is the latest Oklahoma Baseball commit. Just over 12 hours before Murphy announced his commitment to the Sooners, Skip Johnson tweeted his signature "Lookie Here" tweet. Murphy is a 6'5, 240-pound RHP/1B/OF from Ridge Point High School in Missouri City, Texas. Mason Murphy also plays tight end at Ridge Point. His father, Matt Murphy, played at Maryland and was selected in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. Mason Murphy, the 14th-ranked right-handed pitcher in 2025, throws a fastball topping at 92 mph, a slider at 82-84 mph, and a changeup at 78-80 mph. Murphy is also looking to add a splitter to his pitch repertoire.
Mason Murphy's recruitment started to pick up after the dead period ended on August 1st. Murphy attended Skip Johnson's Baseball Camp in late July, where he first saw the University of Oklahoma. Murphy told his dad on the visit, "This place is awesome. I would really like to get a chance to learn more about it. The campus is beautiful." After the camp in Norman, Murphy headed down to Atlanta for the PBR Future's Game, where Coach Todd Butler, Oklahoma's recruiting coordinator, saw him throw on the mound. Murphy talked with Oklahoma when the dead period was lifted on August 1st. Murphy told the Crimson Captain, "The Oklahoma call was different; that is the place I was set on." On his visit to Norman for Skip Johnson's camp, he could not discuss recruiting with the coaching staff, but they were "very welcoming; they made me feel like it was home." Oklahoma's move to the SEC on July 1st, 2024, is a bonus for Murphy, "It was a great part of my decision; it adds another factor as to why I want to go to OU. There is great competition in the SEC, and it will be awesome."
Mason Murphy is not only a highly touted pitcher but is also great in the batter's box. Murphy told the Crimson Captain, "I want to do it all, it sounds awesome. I have everything that hitters have in college. There are just a few steps I still have to keep working hard with, but I could definitely give it a try." Murphy is a pitcher only (PO) at Ridge Point due to the influx of seniors. Murphy has a .383 batting average this summer with four doubles and a home run. Mason Murphy's only home run of the summer came in his first at-bat, a first-pitch grand slam, "It was pretty awesome."
Mason Murphy is eager to return to OU in the near future, "getting to know the coaches more; I can't wait for that." Murphy told the Crimson Captain the type of player Sooner fans can expect in him, "Hopefully, by the time I get there (OU), I'll be throwing harder. Just hitting bombs and throwing gas." Mason Murphy is still a few years away from arriving in Norman, but watching him improve as a pitcher and a hitter before he moves into OU in 2025 will be fun.
