Continuing our Cheez-it bowl film review, in this session we'll see some clips from Jovantae Barnes and talk about his potential for 2023.
If Gavin Sawchuk is the sports car, Jovantae Barnes is the 1 ton diesel truck. With a powerful and lengthier build, Barnes is a prototypical 1 cut running back. Feet that never stop churning, extreme willingness to get behind his pads and not so much take on contact as he seeks it out, he can quietly get 20 touches any given night and you look up to see he has 180 yards at 9 yards per carry. In the clip above he shows this extreme decision making to find a gap and stick with his decision that ends in an absolute car wreck with two defenders, yet he jumps right back up. That’s just who he is and the type of runner he is.
Yards after contact and never letting his feet die are the greatest assets to his running style, but I believe based off athletic traits their be more to him. While this push is nothing less than heroic effort, theirs something to be said about his decision making. Very tenacious, but as he develops it would be preferable to see him choose his spots - if he slows down the decision making he may be able to open new windows for himself. As you watch the top of the screen you can see the cut back between the left tackle and guard come open, these are the avenues he could afford himself once everything slows down for him.
Barnes has fast foot speed but not the cleanest footwork which, when paired with his power, leads to the one cut running style, but if he can just find his vision he has more than enough ability to use that one cut style to even greater effect. He’s just too powerful for the first defender when he reaches the second level cleanly, and if he can afford himself more opportunities at the second level cleanly, he may just give Sawchuk a run for the money in long run ability.
