Emmanuel Dildy accepting an assistant coaching job at Duke left Porter Moser with a spot on his staff to fill. Today, Moser filled that spot with Clayton Custer.
Clayton Custer spent the last two seasons as the Director of Video Operations and Player Development for the Sooners. Three months ago, Custer left Oklahoma to accept an assistant coaching position at Loyola Chicago, his alma mater. Prior to his two-year stint at Oklahoma, Custer was on Porter Moser’s staff at Loyola Chicago as the Director of Player Development.
Custer has not only coached for Porter Moser but he has also played for him. Clayton Custer was an instrumental piece on Loyola Chicago’s 2018 final four team. He averaged 13.2 points, 4.1 assists, and 2.2 rebounds shooting 45.1% from behind the arc that season.
Oklahoma’s Director of Analytics and Assistant Dir. of Video Operations, Dylan Mihakle spoke with the Crimson Captain about Clayton Custer saying, “Clayton is an absolutely tremendous coach. He is amazing with player development on the floor and is great with relationships with the guys.”
Custer is just 28 years old and will head into his fourth season as a coach this year. He is a young up and coming coach who is great with building relationships with players, as Mihakle mentioned above. Oklahoma’s Milos Uzan spoke about Custer in a feature done by Bristol Studio saying, “Clay’s helped me a lot, just because he was a point guard as well. I think he is definitely like a big-bro to me.” Custer will also help the Sooners in the recruiting aspect.
Custer is the third addition to Porter Moser’s staff this season. Joining now fellow Assistant Coach Armon Gates and the Director of Player Personnel, Brock Morris. The addition of Custer leaves the Sooners with just one staff position to fill. Oklahoma’s Assistant Coaches heading into the 2023 season will be Ryan Humphfrey, Armon Gates, and Clayton Custer.
